Can you believe Go Kid Music turned ten this summer?
Ten years of amazing songs, music events, videos, workshops, festivals, tv appearances, songbooks, albums, singles, campsite music sessions, monthly Go Kid Music Club events for families, pitching to producers, co-writing and song commissions, learning about school topics, singing assemblies, Lockdown live-streaming, ukulele clubs and courses, visits abroad, travelling around the UK….and so much more I can't even remember!
It's been a blast!
I started Go Kid Music in August 2015 to try reach a bigger audience with my already large collection of children's educational songs and signed videos - and to enable schools around the whole UK to use my songs in their daily teaching and assemblies.
I had been a freelance musician since 2003 - first touring as a regular ‘adult’ singer-songwriter (before that in bands etc) and in 2007 returned from a USA tour looking for a steadier way to make a better living from music. I ended up in children's music (this video explains all!)
We set up a learning platform where my school membership and other courses - like Go Kid Ukulele Club for kids is hosted - and went from there.
I attended a 6 month Natwest Business Accelerator and discovered I am an Entrepreneur, darling! Who knew??
I learned all about marketing, pitching ideas, finding collaborators, business strategy and setting up a company on a very, very tiny budget - known in the business and Boot-Strapping!
At the time I had support from some eager interns and students and a couple of good friends looked like they may come aboard. But as Go Kid Music developed it seemed right that I'd stay at the helm.
Over the years I've been lucky to work with incredible musicians, writers, puppeteers and artists. I've had three trusty colleagues who helped with admin and daily tasks that sent me into a spin.
Initially, I hoped we would grow into a large music education project and feed my songs into the UK's primary schools. But as time went on school funding cuts and lockdown scuppered many of those plans.
So I have gone back to my roots - as a singer-songwriter - and am really enjoying being a one-woman-band again (that's “Solopreneur” of you're looking for the business term!)
I've had a brush with TV being on Britain's Got Talent with Ravi's Dream Team in 2024 and we almost managed to get a BBC Ceebeebies music TV show in the bag….but these things are really hard to get over the line!
At the moment I'm focussing on growing my YouTube channel as it's the best way to get my songs and music videos out to a large audience. (Check out my children's music channel!)
The monthly Go Kid Music Club is also the highlight of my month - a themed live music show for families that includes an art activity and Brighton's OG and only Kids' Open Mic! Children with and without additional needs are invited up on stage and get their first taste of showbizzzzz! They LOVE IT! and so do their families…and me!
So, thanks for reading thus far - and thanks for checking out Go Kid Music. Here's to the next ten years and who knows what adventures lie ahead -let's hope you can come with me!
Our Ten Year Celebration is Saturday 6th December at the Brunswick Pub, Holland Road Hove. Two shows: 11am and 2pm. Grab your tickets while your here and come party with my WHOLE BAND!!!!
